Health professions education in Japan, including pharmaceutical education, has a long-time tradition of passive lectures in a large classroom setting. On the other hand, active learning has become more and more essential, because of its high learning performance and the fact that teaching everything in the classroom is impossible. Active learning should be a “deep”, collaborative process by the leaners. Educators have to continue asking good questions to students. Relaxing atmosphere, 2. Stimulation of critical thinking by posing appropriate questions, 3. Facilitation of students’ discussion and writing, 4. Collaborative/cooperative learning, and 5. Learning through clinical cases.
