This paper describes a tool grinding CAD/CAM system for conicoid end mill. The conicoid end mill has cutting edges on conicoid which consist of a body of revolution of conic section. Although a ball end mill has one curvature, the cutting edge of conicoid has curvatures changing continuously so that it can improve the finishing efficiency by fitting those curvatures to surface curvatures. This fact had been confirmed by machining experiments. However, it is difficult to make new types of tool such as conicoid end mill since the fabrication method is still not established. In other to utilize the conicoid end mills more practically, a new tool fabrication system is required to establish. In consideration of these problems, the tool grinding CAD/CAM system for conicoid end mill was developed. The CAM software automatically generates GL (Grinder Location) data on the basis of CAD data and some parameters. From experimental results, it was found that the defined tool shapes were obtained and that the system was valid to produce the conicoid end mills.
