This paper aimed to describe the types of counterarguments expected in reports, and to provide suggestions for teaching them in first-year writing and similar courses. In order to do this, I first present the types of counterarguments used in debate, which clearly demonstrate how to counterargue. Next, I analyze the explanations of counterarguments and model reports using commercially available materials, and identify the inadequacies in these explanations. Finally, I discuss the types of explanations needed by students to write better reports.
