This study focuses on the classroom practices using the AI conversational chatbot service “Airfriend” in basic Japanese conversational classes in Taiwanese universities. Because it is available without time or space restrictions, such services will be further utilised in the field of language education in the future. The author introduced “Airfriend” into output practice as scaffolding for the actual interaction. When analysing the learners’ feedback, the author observed that the learners noticed several differences between AI chatbots and humans in terms of conversational strategies and considerate expressions.
