In order to conduct a Large-Eddy Simulation (LES) of turbulent free-surface flows using a smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) method, models needed to account for the turbulence effects and the motion near solid walls have been studied. A method that employs an eddy viscosity in a realistic viscous stress model and the turbulent wall model based on the wall stress is proposed. The model parameters are verified in laminar and fully developed open channel turbulent flows. The laminar flow is calculated well but the results of the turbulent flow are not as good as those of fixed grid methods. Detailed flow characteristics of turbulent flow of collapsing water column observed experimentally are found to be reproduced very well compared with the results of existing methods that do not consider turbulence or the viscous effects.
