In this study, we quantify the effects of place-based policy on the population distribution and regional economy in Japan, and conduct post-evaluation. For this purpose, we construct a model based on quantitative spatial economics (QSE) that is capable of representing inter-regional population mobility and agglomeration economies, and analyzed the effects of four types of place-based policy. Using the model, we conducted a counterfactual analysis in which no place-based policy had been implemented. The results suggest that the place-based policy alleviated the inter-regional disparity in the number of workers, while the total real income decreased, and that the effects of the place-based policy were not limited to short-term effects but persisted over the long term.
