Abstract

In recent years, transportation big data, which can be obtained 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, have been utilized as complementary data to statistical surveys. Although data on the flow of a population have been utilized in urban planning, most studies are limited to the mere understanding of the flow from a departure point to an arrival point and its attributes, and there have been few reports on the practical application in existing research. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to expand the application of transportation big data by developing a new method of utilizing flow population data. Specifically, we developed a method to classify cities, towns, and villages by regional characteristics using population flow statistics that can grasp the total amount of trips between areas based on the flow population data alone. A comparison of the developed method with regional classification based on a cluster analysis of multiple census data confirmed the usefulness of the developed method. Furthermore, a use-case analysis was conducted to devise a process for utilizing this method.
