Digital Archives are expected to play an important role in supporting the knowledge-based society but there are numerous issues that need to be considered. This paper discusses educating digital archives specialists who must develop, manage or use digital archives materials. The paper reviews how universities and Japanese Certification Board for Digital Archivist have educated digital archivists and also looks at specific cases in Western countries (United States, Canada, United Kingdom and Australia). The paper shows that education at universities or in-service training undertaken by related institutions and associations are necessary to ensure the quality of digital archives specialists. It also underlines the importance of expanding career paths such as hiring and improving labor conditions for digital archivists by obtaining feedback from places where digital archives are managed and utilized.
