With the aging of society, addressing cognitive impairment in elderly individuals has become an increasingly important issue in medical settings. Various conditions associated with cognitive impairment are known to exist, including dementia, mild cognitive impairment (MCI), delirium, and cognitive dysfunction related to depression. Early detection and proper assessment of these conditions are directly linked to improvements of the patients’ quality of life (QOL) and prognosis. This article introduces different types of cognitive impairments for non-specialist physicians and explains the key assessment scales used for evaluation of cognitive impairment, covering a wide range from simple screening methods to more detailed assessments.
