During flight, pilots may experience spatial disorientation, one of the most important causes of aircraft mishaps, when exposed to complicated vestibular stimuli, such as acceleration and tilt changes, via the otolith organs in an environment with limited visual information. A better understanding of how the human body interacts and interprets the environment of flight is important, as it can help avoid loss of spatial orientation, secure control of a flight, and prevent aviation mishaps associated with the loss of spatial orientation.
