In order to investigate the mutual relationships among rhythms in the growth movement of pea (Pisurn Sativum) radicles in a group, a new image processing system was developed for nearly simultaneous measurement of 3-dimensional movement of radicles arranged in up to 2 columns and up to 2 rows. In this system, 4 cameras are installed in all directions, and these cameras can automatically track the movement of root tips to prevent them from disappearing out of camera view during their growth process by a newly-developed camera positioner. Above the camera positioner, the seedling positioner which can remotely control the positions of 4 seedlings is installed. In addition, this system can sense a maximum of 4 radicle tip positions within 1 min, by a novel root tip detecting algorithm using pattern matching technologies. As a result, it was found by this system that the rhythmic motion of 2 radicles in the group was synchronized when 3 seedlings were placed, and rhythmic patterns and growth directions of each radicle changed in response to the patterns of placement.
