The results of total hip replacement are decided by many factors in which the operation technique is considered to be most important, and good results due to the improvement of a procedure and or a device have been reported by many authors. In this report the meaning of the properties of bone cement are discussed. Sixty-eight Charnley-type total hip replacements were studied clinically and radiographically and followed up for more than five years. TBB-MMA bone cement (MTBC) was used in 39 cases and CMW in 29 cases. MTBC was developed in our university and has the favorable qualities of a slightly lower elastic modulus, lower polymerized heat, and a wider plastic deformity range than CMW.
No differences could be found in the two groups clinically, but in roentgenographic findings slightly better results were seen in the MTBC group. It was difficult to evaluate the influence of bone cement because many other important factors could not be excluded, but as bone cement should be thought of as a one of important factors in obtaining good in total hip replacement, attempts should be made to improve it in the future.
