The rapid growth of research on laser techniques and applications has been considerable during the past quarter of a century. Especially medical applications of lasers have rapidly expanded to great proportions have become a important division of the laser application fields. We have previously developed mainly the instruments which produce thermal effects. Namely, they were CO2, Nd:YAG and Ar lasers. In addition those producing nonthermal effects will be developed. The use of ultraviolet lasers in medicine is expected to produce new medical treatments.
We have considered several lasers for near future medical use. These lasers are the excimer lasers (examples: Krypton fluorid “KrF”and Xenon chloride “XeCl”), the new solid state lasers (an example; Er: YAG), the flashlamp pumped dye lasers and the semiconductor laser pumped solid state lasers (an example; Nd:YAG).
