An experimental study of partial labyrinthectomy using Argon laser was performed in guinea pigs and monkeys. After stapedectomy, the saccular macula and the utricular macula were irradiated through the oval window. Then the stapes was replaced and the oval window was sealed. The ossicular chain was reconstructed.
The spot size was 100μm; the power applied was from 1.0 to 2.0W; irradiation time was between 0.5 and 1.0s.
The sensory cells of the saccule was detached from the supporting cells immediately after the irradiation. Then the saccular macula was degenerated 10 weeks and loss of Scarpa's gaglion cells was observed. Not only the sensory cells of the utricle but also the utricular nerve was degenerated immediately after the irradiation, as the utricle was irradiated from behind.
