The accelerated development of tourism industry in Kyoto City aggravated waste management problems while there is limited discussion information on the current situation. This research aims to unveil the current situation of tourism waste through waste composition survey of in-street bins in Kyoto City, thereby identifying key categories for further reduction and recycling resolutions in the city. As a result, Gion Shijo, Kiyomizu Temple, Tetsugaku-no-Michi, Ginkakuji Temple, Kinkakuji Temple, Ninnaji Temple, Arashiyama and Fushimi-Inari Shrine were investigated. In summary, in-street bins composition survey in Kyoto city indicated four challenges of tourism waste : huge generation of (plastic) beverage containers , large amount of food drink leftovers, low waste separation rate in in-street waste bins, as well as adulteration of household and industrial garbage in the bins due to illegal dumping. Three waste scenarios were revealed due to regional differences appeared, which indicates that business types may influence waste scenarios to a certain extent. However, dedicated regional researches are required for valid explanations of the distinctions among scenarios.
