In positioning control systems, some tasks cannot be started until a positioning control action is completed. For examples, in hard disk drives, data read or write cannot be started until the read/write head, that is coming from other track, is settled at the center of the track with an allowable tracking-error bound. Therefore, a fast and accurate determination of the end of positioning is required to enhance the performance of the control systems. A simple way for the determination of the end of positioning is to wait several sampling periods in order to confirm that the output never goes out the error bound. However, unnecessary wait is inevitable. In this paper, we propose a method to determine the end of positioning by using a support vector machine. The effectiveness of the proposed method is evaluated by simulations of a head positioning control of hard disk drives.
