A basic study of free surface grinding with a ball type wheel has been carried out by using a grinding center (GC). In order to make clear the mechanism of grinding by a ball type wheel, grinding force was analyzed theoretically. Also grinding experiments were conducted on inclined and free surfaces with a ball type wheel. The experimental and theoretical results are compared with each other in order to certify the analysis and a good agreement was obtained between them. Also a grinding support system for free surface with a ball type wheel was studied.
