Most of high-value-added workpieces have three dimensional and complex shapes. However, it is difficult to automatically determine cutting procedure of rough machining operations in commercial CAM system because of a large number of combinations. In this study, in order to formulate machining know-how owned by skillful experts, a decision method of workpiece shapes based on topology optimization is proposed during a rough machining operation of complicated shapes. From the result of case studies, it is found that pillar-like supports are automatically generated, and confirmed that a rough machining operation of complex parts is achieved according to the decided workpiece shapes.
