Thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) are currently indispensable technology for hot-section components of power-generation gas turbines. With the support of the Japanese government, the development of various test methods for evaluating the characteristics of TBC and their international standardization have been carried out in cooperation with industry and academia, in order to promote the application of TBC. Japan has led the world in developing the international standard of test method for TBC. First, "Test method of cyclic heating for TBCs under temperature gradient" proposed by Japan was established as ISO 13123 in 2011. Next, "Testing methods for measuring thermal cycle resistance and thermal shock resistance for TBCs was established as ISO 14188 in 2012. Furthermore, the test method determining the thermal conductivity and the test method measuring the Young's modulus have been proposed to the ISO stage. This article gives the overview of the international standardization activities of test methods of TBC.
