To improve position accuracy-non-repeatable run out (NRRO)-in HDDs two criteria for optimizing position-signal quality were devised. One is minimum position sensitivity. Position-signal nonlinearity is mainly caused by interaction between trackwidth, erase band and sensitivity distribution of head. In the amplitude pattern, NRRO was reduced by 15% of track pitch (Tp) with increasing trackwidth (Twr) by 10% of Tp while Twr/Tp ratio was less than 0.61. Another criterion is the burst-bit density. NRRO dispersion was within 0.5% of Tp when the burst frequency was optimally set.
