This study present a new gait analysis method by using tri-axes acceleration sensor attached at the joint of ankle. The final purpose of this study is to contribute the design of pedestrian space in a concept of universal design. This paper firstly constructs a portable gait characteristic measurement system and applies one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Principal component analysis (PCA) method to tri-axes acceleration data. Some of individual trends could be evaluated by the mentioned statistical methods, however more elaborate analysis based on physical science and kinesiology will clarify the result that can assist the design of a comfortable pedestrian space.
