Recently, the long-range wireless LAN system has been developed and applied to remotely control boats and marine observation systems. The long-range wireless LAN system is capable for communicating the distance several kilometers away. In order to cover wide areas, it is necessary to use in cooperation with several antennas since the long-range communication is achieved by using the directional antenna. In order to ensure suitable communication environment at the sea, the effect of the Fresnel zone clearance, the sea clutter and the swinging of the antenna at the sea have to also take into account. In this paper, communication characteristics of wireless LAN at the sea have been analyzed.
