In this paper, to prevent accidents caused by drowsy driving, we propose a system to alert drivers whose arousal level decreases during their driving. The proposed system combines eye-openness, which is a conventional physiological indicator to obtain drivers’ alertness, with skin temperature to estimate the decrease of their arousal levels. In this study, PERCLOS (Percentage of eye closure) using EOR (Eye opening rate) is utilized as an index of eye openness, and we additionally propose to use skin temperature change as a novel indicator to read the sign of arousal level decrease. We validated the indicator by subject experiments in advance and set quantitative value to alert drivers before falling in drowsy driving. In experiments with a driving simulator, our proposed system was validated with several subjects.
