Recently much interest has been increasingly paid to bioremediation technologies for polluted land and waters in China. Phytoremediation by using native hyperaccumulator plants has been particularly focused on as a new and potential green environmental biotechnology. The academic institutions and foundations in China such as The Ministry of Science and Technology of China (MOST), The National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) and The Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) have been recently sponsoring the research and practical projects on phytoremediation. It is expecting that more phyto- and/or microbial-remediation programmes in China will be initiated
Using green natural resources to remedy polluted habitats should be encouraged. Phytoremediation and its hybrid technologies are emerging as a green environmental remediation technology with a huge profitable but heavily competitive market in China. However, phytoremediation of polluted land and water should also be emphasized for sustainable agriculture and environmental and public health.
