Cucumber (Cucumis sativus) seedlings grown at 30oC differed in morphology from those grown at 20oC. Hypocotyl elongation over a period of 12 days showed a sigmoidal increase with time at both temperatures, although a greater final length of the hypocotyl was obtained at 30oC. The temperature quotient, Q10for hypocotyl elongation was 2.6. Apart from the difference in hypocotyl length, many other differences in morphological features were observed. Among these changes, trichome morphology at 30oC was conspicuous. The present study focused on changes in trichome morphology at cellular level. We previously reported ethylene's involvement in its alteration (Plant Physiology, in press). A higher production of ethylene by cucumber seedlings grown at 30oC than at 20oC was observed . From these results, we discuss the relationship between high temperature-induced morphological changes in plants, and the involvement of ethylene in these responses.
