This paper addresses on a issue which has been debated through western typographic history in 20 century, by describing a forgotten episode. That is the Herbert Bayer's design for Herbert Read's book "Art and Industry", and Beatrice Warde's critics on it. Bayer's design concept for "art and industry' is well known as the best realised work based on his idea "horizontal axis" presented in his article. However Warde criticised on this work in her essay "Is there room for 'modern' Typography?" appeared on a magazine. Both attitude was typical, Bayer as modernist, Warde as traditionalist.
