In recent years, various efforts have been made on a national scale in Japan to develop human resources in the sciences. It is expected that university laboratories will play a significant role in the development of science-related human resources in Japan. However, there is limited knowledge of what experiences in university laboratories influence students’ decisions to become researchers. In this study, I conducted an interview survey of 15 students in university science laboratories and attempted to visualize their experiences by using M-GTA to determine the influence of their experiences on their decisions to become researchers. The results suggest that an environment where they can ask questions when they are lost is essential for them to aspire to become researchers, and that in such an environment, students are given opportunities to examine their own aptitude as researchers and ultimately make a decision on whether or not to become researchers. The findings from this study may provide useful suggestions for the management of university laboratories.
