In order to develop quantitative experiments of respiration which can be used in upper secondary school biology, a simple type of volumetric gasmeter was introduced, and changes in respiratory rate and RQ-value during seed germination and seedling growth of pea (Pisum sativum L. cv. Alaska) were measured. Conditions of seed incubation and reaction vessels of the equipment were also examined. The data obtained with the equipment were much the same as those with the original type. They were similar to the data which had been obtained with Warburg's manometer by other workers. As the operations of the equipment are easier than those of the original type, upper secondary school students seem to be enough to operate the equipment in their laboratory exercise. Pea is one of the common leguminous plants and convenient to handle. Thus, the experiment system presented here seems to be suitable for the study of respiration in upper secondary school level.
