Several viruses were examined for their interferon (IF) inducing capacity in chick embryo cell cultures. Newcastle disease virus (NDV) inactivated by UV-irradiation was found to be a capable inducer of IF production, whereas infectious NDV had no or undetectable IF-inducing capacity. Infectious Sindbis virus coud induce production of IF in chick embryo cells. Neither influenza virus (PR8) nor HVJ showed any detectable IF-inducing capacity even when they were inactivated by UV. From these results, a possible correlationship between IF-inducing capacity and growth characteristics of virus in chick embryo cells is discussed.
