Production of interferon (IF) in chick embryo cell cultures induced by UV-irradiated NDV (NDVuv) or Sindbis virus was markedly suppressed by superinfection with active NDV or herpes simplex virus. Such inhibition of IF production was complete when the cells were infected with a large amount of NDV not later than 6 hours after the addition of NDVuv. The effectiveness of superinfecting virus was much reduced if it was inoculated later than 6 hours after the addition of IF-inducer or if the multiplicity of infection was reduced to 0.01. When the cells were infected with NDV 20 hours after the inoculation of NDVuv, production of IF was not reduced but rather enhanced. Neither influenza virus (PR8) nor HVJ showed such suppresseing effect on IF production induced by NDVuv.
