The purpose of this paper is to investigate the relationship of ζ potential to one-pass retention in practical papermaking.
It has been proposed that the neutralization of surface charge, patch-work on particle surface, and polymer-bridging particles are main function of wet-end additives in coagulation, flocculation (for good one-pass retention) and drainage in papermaking. Other studies have concluded that in the neutral papermaking, ζ potential (between fixed layer and diffuse layer in electric double layer) was a control index of interfacial electrokinetic phenomena, and was optimum close to zero in practical papermaking.
As beginning we would like to examine the ζ potential of materials used in our papermaking, and analysis the relationship by using ζ potential and one-pass retention data in our Hachinohe Mill with most suitable materials. We saw from the data on No.2 paper machine (low machine speed, single retention system) that the one-pass retention showed the maximum data at-7 mV. On No.3 paper machine (medium speed, single retention system), it showed the maximum data at-5 mV in light weight papermaking. In heavy weight papermaking on No.3 and all papermaking on No.4 paper machine (high speed, dual retention system), it did not show the maximum data.
We can deduce from the data that ζ potential can be useful index to control one-pass retention in practical papermaking on the limited condition that the neutralization of surface charge is dominant. But, ζ potential can be expected useless index to control one-pass retention with woodfree pulp, in high speed papermaking systems.
