This study is a part of larger historical research efforts concerning “Chinese Urban/Architectural Sphere” that covers China, the Korean Peninsula, Mongolia, Vietnam as well as Japan. To illustrate the various aspects of this sphere, We have chosen to focus on Korean urban development during the Chosun period (1392-1910). A large picture of the historical development of Korean cities during this period, including geographical distribution and their constituent elements such as public architecture, markets, urban dwellings, has emerged through our analysis of the contemporary official local records.
