A community engawa refers to a flexible, small-scaled place where, with the boundary between the inside and the outside being dissolved, a multitude of functions mingle together and a variety of encounters and exchanges take place. This study intends, by taking up several typical instances of community engawas which utilize existing stocks of dwellings, shops and public spaces located in urban areas, to consider a possibility that these engawas will lead to the rebirth of urban residential areas in an aging society with fewer children. The making of community engawas is a process where things which have long been abandoned are reformed in search of roles they can play under new circumstances, and the “power of place” is thus revived and re-created; the power these places recover as high-dimensional spaces where vivid interactions take place between people, things and events. It is a positive and voluntary action which transforms “something already made” into “something we make”. Among residents and experts engaged in this undertaking is nurtured a “human ability”, which allows them to understand subtle shades of soft relationships between the rational and the sensuous as well as between self and others.
