A cow affected with hydrops allantois was administered intramuscularly with 25mg of prostaglandin F2α. Twin pregnancy was revealed 7.5 hours after administration (at 227 days of pregnancy). The fetal membranes were retained for 5 days after delivery. Over 100l of pink or straw-colored allantoic or amnionic cfluid was collected during the delivery. The cow regained appetite on the following day of delivery and showed a milkyield of 16kg one month later. Transient polycythemia due to severe dehydration, leukopenia, and the high levels of total serum protein, blood glucose and blood urea nitrogen returned to normal 5 days after delivery. SGOT remained at a high level even before and after administration. The level of reproductive steroids measured by radioimmunoassay was essentially the same as that in normal parturition.
Autopsy of the twin fetuses revealed normal visceral organs, except the kidneys which seemed to be cystic or atrophic. The fetal membranes were edematous.
