In order to reveal the effect of fluid motion on turbulent flame propagation, the swirling flow of a propane-air homogeneous mixture was produced in a disc type cylindrical combustion chamber. The mixture was ignited by an electric spark at the center of the chamber, and the flow and combustion process were observed. In the first report, the gas motion in the chamber was measured by a two-dimensional LDA system, and turbulence characteristics and its decay process were investigated. As a result, it was made clear that (1) turbulence intensity was increased in the burning zone of the turbulent flame, (2) turbulence energy in the burned gas decayed rapidly as compared with that in unburned gas, (3) after completion of combustion, the fraction of higher frequency components of turbulence decreased rapidly.
