A technique is developed for analyzing the first passage probability and the probability distribution of the level crossings for the response of a linear system subjected to an amplitude modulated nonwhite random excitation. The dependence of occurrence of the level crossing upon the number of events is taken into consideration to improve the conventional approach based upon the Poisson assumption. Numerical examples are given for a single degree of freedom linear system excited by noise with an exponentially decaying harmonic correlation function. The results obtained by the present method are compared with the corresponding digital simulation results. A good agreement is found between the analytical and simulation results.
