A survey of viruses occurring in gentian plants in Akita Prefecture, Japan was carried out. RT-PCR assays revealed that Broad bean wilt virus 2 chiefly occurred, and that Gentian mosaic virus and Cucumber mosaic virus were also often detected. Although plants infected with Clover yellow vein virus(ClYVV)were seldom observed, they showed severe necrotic symptoms and developed into wilted stunts. Thus,ClYVV would have deleterious effects on their commercial value, and particular attention should be paid to the viral epidemics. Meanwhile, no Bean yellow mosaic virus, Impatiens necrotic spot virus or Tobacco rattle virus were detected from any samples.
