Aim: To demonstrate the current status of nursing students’ community-based practicums for the development of nursing human resources in a community-based integrated care system.
Methods: This study targeted nursing faculty responsible for nursing practicums at three universities within Prefecture A and explored their characteristics that influenced the inclusion of transitional nursing care components in nursing practicums: pre- or post-discharge home visit guidance, content related to discharge coordination departments, and content related to outpatient clinics in nursing practicums.
Results: The inclusion of pre- or post-discharge home visit guidance in nursing practicums was linked to faculty assignments. Faculty currently in charge of these practicums provided more pre- or post-discharge home visit guidance than those previously or never assigned. Pre- or post-discharge home visit guidance also correlated positively with nursing educators’ experience and leadership in onsite practicums.
Conclusions: Given the variety and gap between level of expertise between faculties, the study findings suggests that in order for nursing education programs to continuously integrate the inclusion of pre- and post discharge home visit guidance, discharge coordination, and outpatient clinic content, there is the need for continuous faculty development in collaboration with nurse practitioners and other professionals within and outside the health profession across hospital and community settings to secure practical learning opportunities for the students and ensure alignment of national frameworks such as JANPU to actual nursing practice and vice versa. This faculty development and collaborative system can be facilitated by emphasizing interprofessional collaboration from undergraduate until professional practice. Further studies are needed to check the implementation fidelity of practicums to national frameworks.
