Glomerular thrombosis (GT) was induced in rats by the combined injections of NTS & LPS. For the amount of NTS which was able to induce a proteinuria of slight grade was required as preparatory and 500 ng/kg or more of LPS was required as provoking agents. LPS should be injected less than 72 hrs after preparatory injection with NTS. Thrombosis developed exclusively in glomerular capillary without any thromboembolic lesions in such organs as lung, liver, & intestine. Transient clamping of the unilateral renal artery for 20 min at the time of NTS injection protected partially the development of GT in clamped side. GT was inhibited in rats with leukocyte counts below 600/μl, although peripheral platelet counts had no effect on the development of GT.This inhibition was partly restored by the injection with 2.5 to 7.5×107 of normal polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMN) immediately after LPS injection. Intravenous injection either more than 1.0×108 of LPS-treated PMN or their homoginates as provoking agents resulted in marked GT. From the results described above it is concluded that LPS plays as important role in the development of GT through a direct effect on PMN.
