Circadian rhythm of plasma aldosterone (PA) and plasma cortisol (PC) were examined in nine patients aged 67 to 83 years with dementia under forced bed rest and in nine control patients aged 72 to 80 years (five patients with rheumatoid arthritis, four with other diseases).
Blood was withdrawn, while patient was in a supine position, every four hours for 24 consecutive hours beginning noon. Cosinor method was used as a rhythm analysis.
There was a significant rhythmicty of PC in both control patients and patients with dementia.
Mesor of control patients was 11.0±3.3μg/dl : amplitude was 5.6μg/dl : acrophase was 6 : 55 clock hours and dementia patient' mesor was 13.2±5.2μg/dl : amplitude was 3.8μg/dl and acrophase was 7 : 13 clock hours. But no significant difference was revealed in mean vector value.
There was a significant rhythmicity of PA in control patients with mesor of 61±19 pg/ml : amplitude of 22 pg/ml and acrophase of 6 : 26 but not in dementia patients.
These results suggest that PA rhythm in more closely linked to central nervous activity.
