With a double-screw extruder and a fishtail die, the possibility of the gradient phase separation structure by self-assembly is explored via the co-extrusion of high-density polyethylene (HDPE)/poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO)(75/25) blend. The temperature profile of the extrusion is equal to the extrusion of HDPE film. Through applying a temperature gradient ΔT to the fishtail die and the melt extrudate from the die in the temperature range above the melting point of the polymers, then cooling it quickly with sizing equipment, we successfully composed the gradient phase separation structure. The cross section structure of the annealed film was observed by using polarizing microscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The cross section structure along the thickness of the film was carefully controlled from normal phase separation of sea-island structure to gradient structure with progress of temperature gradient annealing. This provider a self-assembly molding technology to form and control the gradient structure of a polymer blend to be applied to the traditional co-extrusion. This procedure thus offers examples which may be useful in the search for functions or in the original inventions needed for applied research.
