A local adult population of the nymphalid butterfly, Brenthis daphne rabdia (Butler), was studied by the mark-release-recapture method in a grassland at the foot of Mt Kayagatake in central Japan, in June and July, 1985. The number of adults captured and marked during the study period was 36 for males and 22 for females. The average number of recaptures among each research day in all recaptured adults was l for males and 1.6 for females. The rate of recapture throughout the study period was 11.1% and 45.5% for males and females, respectively. The maximum longevity observed was 21 days for males and 19 days for females. The present results suggest that dispersibility was higher in males than in females, while females showed a tendency to be sedentary. The causes of the differences in the mobility and dispersal patterns between males and females are discussed in the light of the distribution patterns of larval hostplants and adult nectar plants, and the emergence site of females.
