A number of studies on the development of novel fouling mitigation techniques in membrane bioreactors (MBRs), which utilize electric field, are reviewed. Because many organic substances in MBRs are charged negatively, the electric repulsive force can work on them and make the membrane surface clean by applying electric field with a DC power supply continuously or intermittently. And the use of electric field for fouling mitigation in place of the conventional excessive aeration will reduce the operation cost. It is indeed that long–term operation should be carried out and the effect of applying electric field on the biological activity of activated sludges should be demonstrated for practical applications, however the use of electric field is exactly one of the candidates for a novel fouling mitigation technique in MBRs.
