In this paper, we introduce the parameterization process, approaches, and tools for the density-functional tight-binding (DFTB) method. We present general considerations and strategies towards transition-metal elements along with an example of the DFTB parameterization for the Pd element that is transferrable from clusters and surfaces to bulk systems. We believe that it will provide some insights for further parameterization works in the future.
