The curve A seen in Fig. 1 was drawn-up under the conventional process of screen ruling and dot density, means the relationship between halftone density of print and dot area. Using this curve it will be able to determine the dot area of print corresponding with the density of original. The dot area of print is depended on many factors, particularly camera work, plate-making and printing are influential.
After surveying the process variation of plate-making and printing at standard condition, considering the variation, the transparency of halftone negative or positive is determined practically. Hereat if we have the operation of plate-making and printing in the determined variation, the halftone negative will produce ideal tone density in the print. But here is questions how to measure the tone density of print and the process variation.
We classified our experiment into two steps,
Experiment 1: on the tone density of print Experiment 2: on the process variation
In this paper we report only on Experiment 1.
About determining the halftone density of print we have known there is two ways; the one is objective measuring by the use of instrument or calculating formula, and the other one is psycological way being called as subjective measuring, generally this is dealed in statistics using many persons to judge the density. On the density the results of Yule's formula, Tokyo Koden's densitometer and 53 persons' visual determination were compared, and those agreed very well with each other.
In the experiment it was found to be capable to use the densitometer for measuring the tone density of print in place of visual determination of man.
