This work of Saikaku's is the collection of forty short stories which were written after his masterpiece, Koshoku Ichidai Otoko. The first two chapters Shu and Bi are nothing but his contrivances, the hero of which is Nidai Otoko Yoden, the son of Yonosuke, who is the hero in Ichidai Ootko. The pricipal part of this collection is the following 38 stories which are based on the criticism of the gossip books in the domimonde world, which had been published before. He wrote about the women in the "kuruwa" (demimonde) in Kyo, Edo and Osaka and also their various ways of living. I studied the expressions of "furu" (to refuse), "yuku" (to fall in love), "mabu" (a lover in the kuruwa), and "shinju date" (fidelity) in this work in comparison with those in the preceding gossip stories. I attempted to prove how successful Saikaku was in expressing the literary truth that transcends the realities when he described the sense of beauty of the "kuruwa" people.
