Fifty-two patients with persistent otitis media with effusion (OME) who were treated by longterm transtympanic ventilation tube (VT) therapy were evaluated regularly for at least 5 years postoperatively. From the results obtained, an indwelling period of no less than 18 months was found to be necessary for patients under 15 years of age, and permanent ventilation seemed to be necessary for patients over 30 years of age with recurrent OME.
The incidence of abnormal ear drum findings that were considered to be sequelae of VT therapy was less than 8% in both age groups. Therefore, long-term VT therapy was considered to be useful in patients with persistent OME.
We feel that there is a need to study further the relationship between VT therapy and postoperative ear drum findings especially sequelae, as well as the indications for VT therapy.
