α-SiAlON materials are very important structural ceramics, and have been extensively studied from a viewpoint of mechanical properties. Many kinds of rare-earth (RE) ions except La and Ce have been introduced into the crystal structure of α-SiAlON as stabilizers, forming a special family of α-SiAlON. It is well know that RE ions are important activators for phosphors due to the unique electronic structure. For this reason, the incorporated RE ions in α-SiAlON structure could also act as activators to emit α-SiAlON. In the present work, α-SiAlON phosphors were prepared by doping with europium, and their luminescence and diffuse reflection spectra were reported. The results show that (1) strong yellow emission was observed in Eu2+-activated α-SiAlONs;(2) the luminescence intensity can be tailored by careful control of composition; and(3)the α-SiAlON phosphors have high absorption in the near-UV to blue spectra region.
