Blood levels of glutamic acid, glutamine and ammonia, also blood sugar, pyrvic acid and lactic acid, were determined in patients of liver disease, especially livercirrhosis, and these results were confirmed experimentally.
Auther concluded as follows :
1) Mean values of plasma glutamine levels in normal subjects was 8.9mg/dl, hepatitis 8.5mg/dl, livercirrhosis 8.6mg/dl, and hepatic coma 13.6mg/dl. In hepatic coma plasma glutamine showed significant elevation and in livercirrhosis no correlation between plasma glutamine level and disorder of liver function test.
2) After administration of ammonium chloride decraese of plasma glutamine was observed in normal subject and in livercirrhosis decrease was slight.
3) This experiment was also performed in dogs. No significant relationship was observed between plasma glutamine and collateral channels.
4) In normal and hepatitis subjects plasma glutamine incorporated into the the tissues, but in livercirrhosis liberated into the venous blood.
5) In ACD blood decrease of glutamic acid and increase of ammonia were observed in course of preservation, but glutamine showed no significant alteration.
6) These results suggest that excess accumulation of glutamine in tissues follwing by hyperammonemia, and that disturbance of glycolytic metabolism has causal relation to hepatic coma.
