Current research on supplier involvement in product development focuses mainly on technical aspects, organizational views and the relationship between buyer and supplier. While all these approaches contribute much to the topic, the market perspective and therefore the consumer requirements have consistently been neglected. A model of supplier involvement in product development is introduced to explain how failing to bring together consumer requirements information and supplier capabilities information to the phases, in which they are needed, leads to suboptimal products. Based on this model a method is developed to classify Suppliers depending on the nature of the consumer requirements and the supplier′s contribution to fulfill them. For each type of supplier an interaction process is proposed for meeting consumer requirements with supplier capabilities.
